Miami Heat selected him 5th overall for NBA Draft 2003. He quickly became the productive player on the Miami Heat team and he scored 16.2 points with the averages of 4.5 assists and 4 rebounds per game. He is one of the four players from Marquette University who were selected in 1st round. In the school history, his draft was the highest selection. The Heat gradually improved and finished 42-40 in order to qualify for NBA Playoffs.
