J.J. Watt matriculated at Central Michigan University and got a scholarship there. He was led to believe that he would score touchdowns as a tight end. He played 14 games with 8 receptions and 77 receiving yards at Central Michigan. The coaches told him to turn into offensive tackle but he decided to continue with starting spot on the college football as defensive end.

J.J. WattIn 2011 season, Watt entered NFL Draft and became the top performer at NFL Combine 2011 in all categories. He got drafted in first round with 11th overall pick by the Houston Texans. He was signed by the Texans for $11.24 million for 4 years on July 2011.

He started 16 games and finished with 8 assists and 48 solo tackles, and 5 ½ sacks. For the first time, the Texans went to playoffs in franchise history. He recorded 3 assisted tackles, 11 solo tackles and 1 interception for touchdown.

Thereafter, weekly games started and he had to give up hockey because of financial problems and strict schedule. He was a pizza delivery boy when he was studying at the University of Wisconsin.
