When James was young, he was playing for Under-17 Columbia team which finishes in South American U17 Championships 2007 as runners-up where he secured 3 goals. During FIFA Under-17 World Cup, he also secured Columbia in knockout stages. However, they lost to Nigeria, winners of the tournament.  He was also playing for U-20 Columbia squad in 3 youth tournament during the South American U-20 Championship, Toulon Tournament and U-20 World Cup held in Columbia. He scored two goals with three assists during Toulon Tournament 2011. In this show, he was voted MVP of the tournament and Columbia defeated France.

On his early career in South America, Adidas approached James and he had been featured in several ads occasionally. He also signed the deal with Nestle drink ‘Milo’, Pony Malta (Columbian drink), and “Clear” shampoo brand. Adidas also issued his own custom boots to pay tribute to his achievements.
